The Easiest Way to Explore California Wine Regions
Location matters – especially in regards to wine tasting. Regional tasting rooms are a great way to get a feel for what makes California wine regions unique... in one easy stop.
Over 100 different winegrapes are possible because of the diverse landscape of California’s wine regions – but even within such a wide number of varieties, there can be dramatic regional differences! What does that mean? It means the same type of wine can taste dramatically different depending on the region where it was grown. This is because a wine’s ultimate expression is greatly influenced by terroir. Simply put, that means where a winegrape grows plays a huge role in how the wine ultimately tastes. Even the seemingly smallest detail like microclimate, soil type, or amount of rainfall can result in noticeable differences.
So, unless you’re a wine expert, why does this matter to you? First of all, it means that between varied regional expressions and countless varietals and blends, there’s truly a wine for every palate. However, if you’re new to the wine world, unfamiliar with a specific region, short on time, it can be challenging to visit enough wineries to taste these differences and find your personal favorites. If only there were a way to get a feel for a growing region’s unique vibe- one place where folks can taste multiple wines from a region in one cool, convenient place. Well, lucky for you, there is! Regional tasting rooms are an easy and great way to get acquainted with California wine regions.

Oakville Grocery + Wine Merchant
Oakville Grocery has been an integral part of the Napa community for almost 150 years! Originally serving as a dry goods, grocery and hardware store, the space has evolved into a chic upscale grocer with a regional wine tasting room added in an adjacent old Victorian house in 2020. Completed renovations transformed the shared space into the Oakville Wine Merchant regional tasting room, as well as the 1881 Napa Wine History Museum.
The Oakville Wine Merchant showcases wines from each of Napa Valley’s distinct appellations with multiple experience options.
Guests can taste over 60 wines by the glass with self-service tastings, curated flights, and hosted appellation experiences. Once you’ve settled on a glass, wander upstairs to the museum to learn more about Napa Valley’s rich agricultural history.
Old Sugar Mill
While Sacramento is best as the known capital of California, the surrounding area is studded with vineyards and wineries. Nestled in the middle of acres of agricultural land near the Delta, the historic Old Sugar Mill is just 15 minutes outside of Sacramento. Housed in an old sugar mill, this fun and funky regional tasting room serves as a tasting room for 14 local wineries, offering an excellent introduction to Sacramento’s wine scene.

Tin City
While not technically a wine trail, Paso Robles’ Tin City is home to dozens of tasting rooms. What makes Tin City especially appealing is that all of the shops and tasting rooms are within walking distance of each other. What makes this converted industrial park unique is the spirit of collaboration and innovation. There’s no pretense or competition, just folks focused on making creative, unique wines.
Napa Valley Vine Trail
The newly opened Napa Valley Vine Trail is a paved hike and bike trail currently connecting Napa to Yountville and St. Helena to Calistoga. Ultimately, this expansive, 47-mile project will connect over 80 wineries and vineyards across the entirety of Napa Valley – from Vallejo Ferry to Calistoga.
