In Season Now: Winter Fruit
The colder months are often associated with comfort food – think rich, creamy dishes and cozy casseroles – but fresh winter fruit is our favorite way to brighten even the chilliest day. Thanks to California’s temperate climate, many regions enjoy a year-round growing season, which means an abundance of fresh fruit is available even in the heart of winter. Let’s take a look at some of the fabulous fruits that are in season during winter in California.
Kiwi
Kiwi is often mistaken for a tropical fruit, but this winter favorite thrives in California’s Central Valley, where about 98% of the nation’s kiwi crop is grown. Kiwi is harvested in October and November, and thanks to its long shelf life, it remains in season in California from October through May. Although green Hayward kiwi is still the most readily available variety, look for gold and red as well as Tropikiwi at specialty grocers.

Persimmons
Here in the Golden State, persimmons are one of our favorite fall and winter treats. There are two distinctly different varieties available – Fuyu and Hachiya. Fuyu persimmons have a crisp, apple-like texture and are perfect for snacking and salads. Hachiya persimmons are best enjoyed when fully ripe, and their soft, custard-like consistency is perfect for baking. California persimmons are only in season from September through December, so be sure to get your fill while the season lasts!

Pomegranates
Pomegranates are in season from September through January in the Golden State, although juice is available year round. California grows virtually all U.S. pomegranates, and the brilliant red fruit thrives in the Central Valley sunshine. While their gorgeous exterior makes pomegranates an excellent choice for holiday and winter decor, the edible seeds (known as arils) add a beautiful burst of color and a pop of sweet-tart flavor to sweet and savory recipes.

Citrus
Did you know that California grows more fresh citrus than any other state in the nation? While some citrus varieties are in season year-round in the Golden State, peak season runs from September through June. From honey-sweet Mandarin oranges to tangy, juicy grapefruit, there’s a citrus fruit to suit every recipe and any palate!

Grapes
In California, there are three different types of grapes – winegrapes, raisin grapes and table grapes. While winegrapes are grown throughout the majority of the state, most of California’s table grapes are grown in the Southern Central Valley and the Coachella Valley. Southern California’s warmer climate allows for an earlier harvest, and you can find California Grown grapes at your local grocer from May through December, with the season sometimes extending through January (weather permitting).

Always in Season
Don’t forget about California’s always-in-season fruits like strawberries, lemons, prunes, raisins, dried figs and dates. These dependable staples add a touch of California Grown goodness to any meal, no matter the season!
