New for the Bucket List – Pinyon Restaurant in Ventura & Ojai
Some restaurants do one thing well. Others do everything well. Pinyon restaurant exists in that second, rarer category, and once you eat there, you will want to tell people about it.

The Pinyon restaurant family started in Ojai, where a family-and-friend-run team built something around a wood-fired oven, a natural wine shop, and a devotion to local farmers that borders on principled. The Ojai location operates as a wood-fired pizzeria and bakery. The menu however changes to reflect whatever is actually growing nearby. The Ventura sibling restaurant follows the same blueprint. Think wood-fired cookery, sourdough baking, and a beverage list that celebrates small-scale producers who take minimal intervention seriously both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Both spots book through Resy. Neither has a phone. That is a personality choice, and it works.

One of California’s Best Snacks Is Probably Already In Your Pantry
We started our dinner at Pinyon restaurant with the Pinyon Pine Salted Santa Barbara Pistachios. They really set the tone for the entire meal. Pinyon adds their namesake pine salt to perfectly toasty and warm pistachios and steps back. That is the recipe. Sometimes the best move is to get out of the way of a great California ingredient and let it shine. The Warm Olives and Caperberries from the snacks menu rounded out the spread.

California Pistachios: Small Nut, Big Energy
If you’re snacking on pistachios in the United States, they almost certainly came from California. More than 98% of American pistachios are grown here, and the United States now leads the world in pistachio production. These vibrant green nuts have deep roots in the Golden State, with the first trees planted in the early 1880s.
Pistachios aren’t just tasty. They’re also a plant-based source of complete protein, making them a smart, satisfying snack. Did you know that a 1-ounce serving equals about 49 pistachios, which is more per serving than any other snack nut? It’s true! You know what they say, good things come in small packages, and that is especially true when you’re talking about California pistachios.

Seasonal Plates Built on Locally Grown Agriculture
Pinyon’s plates section is where the kitchen’s relationship with local farmers comes fully into focus. The Coleman Lettuces with Avocado Green Goddess, Tokyo Turnip, and Pistachios were among the most satisfying plates we had during our entire visit in Ventura County. Coleman Family Farms has been a fixture in Ventura County agriculture for generations, and their lettuce shows exactly why local produce matters. The brightness and snap in that bowl is the freshest around. The avocado green goddess leaned into California’s signature richness without going heavy, and yes, more of those incredibly toasty pistachios were tossed in. No notes. Total perfection.
The Wood-Fired Asparagus with Parmigiano, Hollandaise, Crouton, and Tarragon hit every texture note this girl could dream of in one bite. The char from the wood fire balanced the richness of the lemon hollandaise, and the little bites of crunchy croutons added the structural contrast the dish needed.
The Wood Fired Chicken Wings with House Harissa and Yogurt Dip rounded out the table with bold flavors that never overreached, grounded beautifully by the cooling yogurt dip.

The Perfect Wood Oven-Fired Pizza
Pinyon is, at its core, a wood-fired pizzeria, and the Margheritaville (Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil) is the proving ground. The crust arrived blistered and chewy with a slight tang, the kind of foundation that makes simple toppings shine. California-grown tomatoes carry the sauce, and the fresh basil goes on after the pizza comes out of the oven, staying bright rather than disappearing into the cheese. A simple pizza that earns every inch of space it takes up on the table.

End Your Meal With Dessert. Always End With Dessert.
California Medjool dates, grown in the dry heat of the Coachella Valley, anchor the Sticky Date Pudding at Pinyon restaurant. Served with an Ojai Pixie Tangerine Caramel and Creme Diplomat, a luxurious, fluffy French pastry cream. This flavor combination produces the kind of rich-meets-bright contrast that makes ordering dessert truly one of the best decisions of the night.
Ojai Pixie tangerines are a Ventura County agricultural story unto themselves, and the caramel made from them ties this dessert back to the region in a really delicious way.

Ojai Pixies are not just any citrus. They are late-season tangerines (AKA mandarins), prized for their sweetness, easy-peeling skin, and vivid flavor.

The NY Cheesecake with Buckwheat and Espinosa Coral Cherry Compote rounded out the table: refined, seasonal, not overthought.
