We have personally visited many of the farms, wineries, and businesses highlighted here, so this guide is based on firsthand experience.

From savoring fresh-picked fruit to strolling through kiwi orchards, these destinations showcase the best of Butte County and its neighboring regions. Ready to explore? Let’s dive into the bounty of Butte County and the surrounding area.

The Heart of California’s Farm-to-Fork Movement

Butte County, California, is a cornerstone of the state’s agricultural industry. It produces diverse crops that feed Californians and the world. This region is a farming powerhouse, from the iconic rice paddies stretching for miles to its walnut orchards and peach groves.

The fertile soil and Mediterranean climate make it ideal for growing everything from almonds to olives. Family-run farms uphold traditions passed down for generations. Agritourism allows visitors to connect directly with these farms, bringing the “farm-to-fork” ethos to life.

History of the Region

Butte County and its surrounding area have a history as rich as the soil. This area was originally home to the Maidu, Wintun, and Nissenan people, who lived off the land for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. Key figures in early California history, such as Peter Lassen, Leland Stanford, and John C. Frémont, played pivotal roles in shaping the region.

A local pioneer, John Bidwell, introduced almonds to California, planting the seeds for one of the Golden State’s most significant industries. Even early Hollywood made its mark here—as parts of iconic movies like Robin Hood and Gone with the Wind were filmed in this area, adding to its storied past.

Local Farms To Know
