California Grown

In California, farming is a woman’s job.

The United Nations declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, a historic milestone recognizing women’s vital role in agriculture worldwide. The resolution, led by the United States with support from 123 countries, is more than a celebration; it’s a global commitment to equity, visibility, and opportunity. California, home to one of the most diverse and productive agricultural economies in the world, is proud to be part of this global recognition.

Here in the Golden State, women are essential to every step of the food and farming system. They manage orchards, run businesses, lead sustainability efforts, and keep multi-generational farms thriving. California is home to over 45,000 women producers, who collectively steward more than 11 million acres of farmland. From prunes to Pinot Noir, they are at the forefront of innovation, climate-smart practices, and specialty crop leadership. In fact, 63% of farms in California are female-operated, and nearly 38% of all producers are women — numbers that continue to grow as more women take the lead in shaping the future of food.
